L&P Convinces PTAB Not to Institute Four IPR Trials

Today the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) issued decisions denying inter partes review (IPR) petitions against the follow patents owned by L&P client KAIFI, LLC:

•    U.S. Patent No. 7,689,001, entitled “Method for Recognizing Location Using Built-In Camera and Device Thereof”

•    U.S. Patent No. 8,040,232, entitled “USN Middleware Apparatus and Method for Generating Information Based on Data From Heterogeneous Sensor Networks and Information Service Providing System Using the Same”

•    U.S. Patent No. 8,930,196, entitled “System for Detecting Speech Interval and Recognizing Continuous Speech in a Noisy Environment Through Real-Time Recognition of Call Commands”

•    U.S. Patent No. 11,082,518, entitled “Method for Operating Relation Server and System Using the Same”

The IPR petitions were filed by Amazon.com, which KAIFI had sued for infringement.  L&P filed requests for discretionary denial on June 11, 2025 and preliminary responses on July 11, 2025.  On July 29, 2025, the PTAB declined to institute trials.  L&P partner Matt Phillips, who led L&P’s efforts in these cases, remarked, “Today’s victories continue our perfect record over many cases on behalf of our long-time client KAIFI.”
